Clara Barton with some friends founded an American chapter of the International Red Cross in 1881. Her efforts focused on disaster relief (food, shelter and medical care to the 25,000 victims of the 1889 flood in Johnstown, PA). Today, 35,000 employees and more than 500,000 volunteers in 700 chapters focus on
disaster relief with the Red Cross. This is all because one courageous woman, Clara acted upon the need that she saw. The Red Cross has trained 15 million Americans in disaster relief. Clara is truly an amazing woman!
